Congratulations to long time SYHA Coach and Volunteer Greg Milburn who was the recipient of the 2019 Wellington Mara Award from the Mickey Lione Jr Award Fund

The Wellington Mara Award recognizes an exemplary individual who volunteers time and talent to provide opportunities for youngsters in any city-sanctioned, nonprofits sports league in Stamford. The award includes a $2,500.00 contribution to the nonprofit organization for which the individual volunteers.  In creating a youth-coaching award, The Lione Fund continues to support and perpetuate the values that made Wellington Mara a legendary sports leader. He believed that the valuable qualities and lessons that can be learned on the field of play should, if well taught, carry over to all the all aspects of life. He taught by instruction but, more importantly, by example. The Lione Fund reinforces this ideal and these qualities in the naming of this award after Mr. Mara, who held himself to the highest standards of honor and respect for self, family, and community.

"Greg Milburn has influenenced thousands of young people over the last 35 years by introducing them to the game of hockey at SYHA. He has been instrumental in developing first-time players through the Tiger Sharks program. By providing individual attention and encouragement, he has positively influenced our youth through sports and help fosted a strong bond with the community" The Mickey Lione Jr Fund

On behalf of SYHA, we thank you for all that you have done to instruct and inspire the young players of our community.

Philly Tournament Update

Congratulations to all of the Stamford Sharks teams who participated in the Philadelphia Fall Classic. 5 out of 7 teams made it to the championship game. The kids played their hearts out and it was a huge success.  Congrats to Squirt A for winning their bracket!

SQUIRT A

Congratulations to the Stamford Sharks Squirt A team at the Philadelphia Fall Classic!  They came home undefeated and brought home the championship banner. Hard work payed off for these boys.

SQUIRT A1

The Squirt A1 team headed into Philadelphia with lots of close games and not a lot of W's to show for them. They played their hearts out the entire tournament, finally earning a spot in the championship game. There they faced a tough North Jersey Avalanche team that had beaten them 4-1 earlier in the tournament. Again the Sharks played hard, ultimately falling 5-4 in overtime. They brought home the silver medal and lots of fun memories--visiting the Eastern State Penitentiary, running the Art Museum steps like Rocky, and gorging themselves on cheesesteaks at Pat's and Geno's.

Pee Wee A

The Sharks Pee Wee A Team had a fabulous weekend in Philly coming in Runner Up and scoring a total of 19 goals! The boys had as much fun off the ice as they did on the ice together. They used their team building skills to get out of the “Detention” and “Behind bars” Escape Rooms, tried out the local cuisine, while some attended a Flyers game, and others tried their luck at Dave and Busters. Of course their favorite was playing manhunt together at the hotel, while the parents enjoyed their own bonding over the weekend. All in all, although we didn’t bring home the Gold, the boys played well, and most importantly, they had fun together!

Pee Wee A1

The Pee Wee A1 team had a fabulous weekend in Philly. The team made it to the final game on Sunday but came up short against their opponent. They ended up with 4 wins and 1 loss with 16 goals for the weekend. The players had a great time touring downtown Philly, attended a Flyers game and Valley Forge National Park.

Bantam A

Bantam A had an awesome time at the Philly Tournament! The boys team bonded at our team party, working together through 2 escape rooms, and playing knee hockey! The games were action packed and full of excitement.  They are looking forward to hitting the ice and winning more games this weekend!

Bantam A1

Huge props to our Bantam A1 Team who played with a lot of class and character. Our boys made it into the championship game and fought back from a two-goal deficit in the third period to tie the game 3-3. But the Wissahickon Warriors managed to sneak one by our stellar goalie with 40 seconds left on the clock. Despite some near misses in the waning seconds of the game, we came up short. Nevertheless, everyone had a great time and got to know each other better.

IMPORTANT CONCUSSION PROTOCOL-PLEASE READ

Parents,

In an effort to protect our players, SYHA is implementing the King Devick Concussion Protocol.

The King-Devick Test is a two-minute rapid number naming assessment in which an in individual quickly reads aloud single digit numbers and evaluates impairments of eye movements, attention and language function. The test is used by many College and Pro organizations.

Please take a look at the Video Link and Website below. The Process and implementation is explained in full.
